An eighteen-year-old Yugoslavian boy from a small village in the valley is unwillingly drafted as a soldier in a communist army, is wounded, and emigrates to the United States to live with his dignitary uncle who happens to be the Yugoslavian Consulate in Chicago. He is culturally shocked upon arrival--the size of O'Hare Airport, the big city, the big cars, and American wealth. He eventually moves to New Orleans to live and work in a machine shop belonging to his uncle's friend. He learns to speak English and through a series of events captures his version of the American dream for almost twenty years.
