An Icon of Pediatric Neurosurgery: The Fred J. Epstein, MD, Tribute Issue

This special issue of 'Pediatric Neurosurgery' is dedicated in memory of Fred Epstein, one of the founding fathers of 'American Pediatric Neurosurgery' and an unprecedented pioneer in the field. Former trainees, who are now a proud living legacy to his impact on pediatric neurosurgery, were invited to contribute on topics dear to him. Surgery for childhood spinal cord and brainstem tumors, intra operative electrophysiological monitoring, tethered spinal cord, and epilepsy surgery were developed or pushed forward by Dr. Epstein during his notable career and are discussed in this special issue. The contributions reflect current interests within the pediatric neurosurgical community and demonstrate the breadth and depth of the innovative neurosurgical approaches Dr. Epstein eagerly passed on to his students and trainees.
