Inspector James Macpherson has been sent on a mission to investigate a murder in a small community in the western part of Virginia. The year is 1785. The murder was not just any murder, but a poisoning. Upon his arrival, two more murders occur within the space of a month. Inspector Macpherson enlists the aid of a fellow Highlander Scot, Morgana Mackenzie. She is a healer and very knowledgeable of the herbs and their benefits and their dangers.
