They were called "Engelandvaarders". In total almost 1,700 young man and women who escaped occupied Holland between 1940 and 1943, to embarked on a dangerous trip, some crossing the Channel with a canoe or a sailboat or like my father by foot, train, bus through France, Switzerland and crossing the Pyrenees in mid winter.(Updated Version)It took him 390 days.
