An Angel of Sodom is a short novel of an obese young man, Jackie, struggling to adjust to humiliation and rejection. It is narrated by his older sister whose belated acerbic leap of imagination into her brother's life is her attempt to neutralize the depth of her feeling about what she bears witness to, providing her with the only way she can manage to accompany Jackie wherever he goes. The seven stories in this volume involve a man who rescues himself from feelings of worthlessness by donning a papier m?che pig's head; an ex-convict who joins forces with other displaced persons to form a punk rock band; a man who seeks comfort for his soul in the confessional only to end up extending his criminal activity at the behest of his priest; a shipboard meeting of two women who judge the world from martini glasses in the shadow of an exploding volcano; the meeting of two misfits who have known each other only through an exchange of letters; a man who after 25 years still can't forget the moment he failed to comfort a prostitute who captured his imagination from afar; a man who seizes on a dire course of action to make an impression on the man who jilted him.
