I enjoyed the intertwining of two different cultures. One, the rigid japanese company man culture. The other, the unforgiving life of midwestern US farm life. Mr. Asano does a wonderful job of showing the parallel between the two cultures. Although one is urban and the other rural, the fathers are of the same hard-headed personalities. The two sons, one japanese and the other american both love a woman despised by the father because of cultural differences. It is amazing how Mr. Asano sees through the racism of the two cultures to find truth. He could have easily used stereotypes in many of the situations, but he showed a different side that I had never considered. Mr. Asano is truly a remarkable writer. He is destined to be the next Hemingway of this new millenium.
