Book Overview

A riveting record of an unusual journey by Courtney Cowart, a theologian who witnessed the two greatest catastrophes in recent American history - the 9/11 tragedy at the World Trade Center and the devastation of Hurricane Katrina - and how the author actively participated in the healing of both.

An American Awakening spans the time from September 11, 2001, through the second anniversary of Hurricane Katrina in 2007. Beginning in New York, this account reveals Cowart's role in the Ground Zero recovery ministry at St. Paul's Chapel, The Little Church That Stood, across the street from the World Trade Center. This gripping memoir presents the spiritual commitments made when the author's life was spared on 9/11, and how these commitments eventually led her to answer the call to serve in New Orleans. It is an engrossing account of Cowart's experience in post-Katrina New Orleans as director of the Office of Disaster Response for the Episcopal Diocese of Louisiana, a post she accepted after her life-changing experience at Ground Zero. Cowart is probably the only American spiritual leader called to a sustained, front-line role in both the 9/11 and Katrina disasters, and this is the first and only memoir of that dual experience.

Truly Inspiring!

"An American Awakening" by Courtney Cowart is an inspiring and motivating true story of the author's own experiences with September 11th and Hurricane Katrina. Her writing engulfed me into her stories of those she helped and took care of during both of these tragedies. It shows Cowart's own transformation through all of her selfless generosity as she dives into helping rebuild both of these cities. It is a call to action for all who read it and shows what a difference one person can make. Beautifully written, it shows what we can all do in this new period in American history. A Must Read!

Live Like You Were Dying

This book is not some rah-rah anthem for folks who wish to be be inspired to do good works, but rather an inspired autobiographical account of one woman's painful yet glorious "birth" through the ashes of September 11th while the towers came down and she sensed her death could be eminent. In the next critical days, she would pull herself up from her precious antique-filled apartment on the Upper East Side and march BACK to that very site to begin the work that became the miracle of St. Paul's Chapel. From that paradigm-shifting experience that lasted over a year, Courtney found she could did not go back to East 75th as if 9/11 had never happened, as if the wonder of the graces and gifts of true service had never touched her heart. Then came the call from New Orleans...what was televised around the globe is not the real story of New Orleans. Walk with Courtney Cowart from Manhattan to New Orleans and see and hear what you never thought possible in OUR COUNTRY. Yet there is no taint of bitterness, only a shining, bright hope for this new era that has dawned for us and our children. YES WE CAN!

Yes We Can!

An American Awakening is an on-the-ground example of what our country has just expressed in our national elections. Courtney's stories and reflections are real, hopeful, and offer us all inspired and concrete ways to get started on being part of this country's resurrection.
