This is indeed one of the best books ever. As a Romanian and a child during communism looking at the author's life and reading his book makes me realize how fortunate I am to live in a free Romania. I moved to the DC area not long ago but George Crisan had already passed away. I'd have loved to meet him!!!!
George Crisan: An amazing writer!! "Escape form Rumania"

An amazing book! I could not put it down... my family wouldn't let me... I was reading it aloud to them, and by the time they relented a bit (to indulge me in a glass of water), I was hoarse, the hour was late... and still they begged for more! These vignettes in the author's life are ALL true: It begins with his innocent childhood, spent in a very remote region of Rumania (not Romania), in which he was loved and protected... where the only real danger was posed by the "dogmen." Crisan's descriptions of this region, its people, his family, and his adventures, are truly poetic. This innocence is shattered when the world outside begins to penetrate the protective and ancient ways, and George's father uproots his son from the only home he's known and from the people who love him, because his father is convinced it best for George to learn "the modern ways of the world, and to get an education." So he sends little George to boarding school, far away from home. George his heartbroken. And then it gets worse. By the time George is grown, the Communists are ruling the country, but their grasp is insidious... Like a frog which is slowly heated in water, and doesn't bail out of the pot because it doesn't even realize it is hot, George is immersed, but not fully aware of how "hot" the "waters" of Communism are becoming. There is a turning point, however, in which George does realize, that he is, indeed, in "Hot Water"; how Communism was actually affecting him at the time, and how it eventually would would affect him in the future. Ironically, the heartbreaking experiences of his childhood in order to "get a good education in the modern world", prove to be invaluable to his very survival. He lived to tell the tale... which, in itself, is AMAZING!
