In the quiet space between the stars, an aspiring empire, Enovion, sifts through the cinders of a fallen intergalactic civilization in the wake of an ancient and unknown calamity. While little is known of the Forebearers, the mysterious species that ruled this lost society, the misadventures of Ser, an up-and-coming mage from the current empire's capital haunted by powerful magic that seems to respond to his emotions, and Vara, a soldier of Enovion's colonial forces forcibly indoctrinated after the invasion of her home planet of Olruun, will shed light on the ultimate fate of the Forebearers and the legacy they have left behind.
Amongst the Ashes is an investigation of both personal and societal progress, driven largely by the personal journeys of its two main characters. Over the course of the novel, readers are asked to reflect on questions with no concrete answers as Vara and Ser are confronted with them. The reader is placed at the center of a vast universe that teems with strange life, and must do what they can to ground themselves, deciding what to hang onto and to let go of as they travel with Vara and Ser through the wreckage of a once-grander existence.
