Don't miss Ammonite

A superb period movie about fossil Hunter Mary Anning in her later years and her encounter with Charlotte Murcinson. Kate Winslet as Mary Anning and Saoirse Ronan movingly portray these 2 woman. The movie has little dialogue. Instead of words, the you are artfully connected to these women and their world through quiet stillness, facial expressions, and hands...always hands. This movie presents a 1840's world by juxtaposing British working class poverty and upper class privilege; rendering women of science invisible; and demonstating a woman's place in marriage is under a man"s control. Socially shy and emotionally damaged Mary and depressed and mourning Charlotte get off on the wrong foot when they meet. When Charlotte becomes seriously ill , it is Mary who must nurse her back to health. This changes everything . ( by the way Ammonite is a fossil of a prehistoric sea creature and can be symbolic of change) The movie challenges us to see how kindness, friendship , trust and love can heal...the closed hearted Mary and the sad hearted Charlotte. Kate and Saoirse did all their own love scenes and stunts. Kate spent time in Lyme Regis England learning how to fossil hunt so her scenes along the winter shoreline look authentic. Saoirse learned how to embroider and play piano. Costumes, wigs and makeup are spot on.Filmed on location in Lyme Regis England, where the real Mary Anning lived, the director makes us feel the winter wind , cold, and rough ocean as if we were there. This movie should have had many Academy Award nominations in my opinion, but it was snubbed. It deserved Best Actress, Best supporting actress, Best sound achievement, Best costume and makeup, and best screenplay and director. I personally believe it should have been nominated for best movie. See this film and be transported to Mary Anning's world and follow her journey from loneliness to love. Also, I recommend the Tracy Chevalier novel REMARKABLE CREATURES, which is based on Mary Anning's lifelong friendship with Elizabeth Philpot
