From the author of Mile Zero come a heart-racing, "power-packed thriller (San Francisco Chronicle) set in Key West that illuminates a world of dark desires, hidden truths, and colliding destinies at... This description may be from another edition of this product.
Thomas Sanchez combines his familiarity with the Caribbean area with an ecological, anti-establishment message in American Tropic and can't really pull it off. The characters don't seem well rounded, more a collection of quirky traits: A radio announcer who reminded me of Robin Williams in "Good Morning Vietnam," an overachieving policewoman who's looked down upon by her male colleagues, a couple of soulless commercial fishermen, Hogfish the crazy (or stoned?), and of course Bizango, who is just as bizarre as the name implies, but isn't exactly real.
The book is described as a "thriller" on the fly leaf, which apparently refers to the goriness of the murders, but it's pretty much a straightforward mystery, and at barely 200 pages the plot flies right along. This feels like the least developed of all Sanchez's novels; even in KING BONGO I had a better feel for the characters. However, if you're looking for a simple mystery where good and bad and clearly separate and each get what they deserve, you might like it.
