American Poets and the Evolution of the American Poetic Voice

Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. America's poetic tradition grew out of the traditions of western Europe, evolving and growing to incorporate influences from its diverse immigrant population. American ideals and aesthetics become more developed as the nation grows into itself and its literary tradition begins to shape itself. While the new nation saw many great writers, like Longfellow of Poe, it was not until the latter half of the 19th century, in the works of Whitman and Dickinson that the American voice shone through. These two poets defined an American idiom which continues to impact poets today. The 20th century, with its dramatic political and social events produced new aesthetics of "American poetry" seen in the modernists and the beatniks, among other schools. Finally, we turn to three contemporary poets who, though their legacy remains to be seen, hold a vital place in the nation's poetic culture today.

Project Webster represents a new publishing paradigm, allowing disparate content sources to be curated into cohesive, relevant, and informative books. To date, this content has been curated from Wikipedia articles and images under Creative Commons licensing, although as Project Webster continues to increase in scope and dimension, more licensed and public domain content is being added. We believe books such as this represent a new and exciting lexicon in the sharing of human knowledge.
