American Moon takes place in the 1980's in Communist Poland. The novel tells a story of a young man, Janek, a recent university graduate who struggles to see a worthwhile future in the bleakness and grayness surrounding him. It is only when a ghost from the past in the form of a renegade secret police captain barrels into his life, is Janek spurred into a battle against the oppressive regime. With the help of his beautiful girlfriend Ela, a street urchin named Tulip, a Catholic priest and a good-hearted drunk, Janek engages in a game of cat and mouse through the streets of Waraw with the stakes becoming ever higher.
