Information gives us the power to paint a colorful picture of our predecessors as individuals, and the times in which they lived. This 21st Century man has endeavored to capture and contextualize the life and times of one 19th Century man, and the national catastrophe in which he played a part.

Understanding the past is to understand the present. Understanding the past will also help each of us to illuminate our own path forward. Through this work, I have tried to create an honest accounting of my country's evolution, and to provide a greater understanding of the character of the United States in the early 21st Century. Through the lens of one 19th Century man and one 20th Century boy, I have tried to shine a light on my country's lineage, legacy, pride and change through this American Journey.
