Powerful Story that sticks with you
Published by K.Hall , 7 months ago
I saw Oprah interview the author on TV one day, and her enthusiasm for the book was so contagious that I decided to pick it up myself. I don't usually read Oprah's favorite books, but I thought what the heck, why not... And wow—Mexican Dirt had me hooked almost the entire way through!! The first three or four chapters are a bit slow, I put the book down and moved onto something else for a little while, BUT I get it now. That background is essential to the rollercoaster ride you are about to experience, because baby, the pace quickly picks up and doesn’t let up until the very end.
I truly connected with several of the characters and found myself rooting for them throughout their journey. Although I would have liked a more in-depth conclusion for some of their storylines, I still highly recommend this book. It sheds light on the brutality of the cartels and opened my eyes to a few harsh realities. These are ordinary people thrust into extraordinary circumstances, making split-second decisions that really make you reflect on what you might do in their place.
American Dirt: Best Book Ever!
Published by Penny Bosley , 12 months ago
American Dirt has stuck with me ever since I read it. I acclaim it to be one of the very best books I've ever read, and I've read thousands! I tell my sister all the time she needs to read it. I found it very interesting, well-written, and I couldn't put it down.

It was a great book and a real eye opener in a lot of ways. It has an interesting twist since the mom knows the cartel guy. I loved it and it was a great read.
Horribly boring and too "political"
Published by Michele G. , 2 years ago
This book was so "highly recommended" by people that I accepted the hype & bought it. It's HORRIBLE. I hate it, hate it, hate it. Did I mention I hate it? Very slow read, boring as heck. I found it too "political" with unsettling undertones & felt like a sheep being led to slaughter... as though the author was trying to send a subliminal message via this book. Please just STOP. That was several hours I'll never be able to get back again. I felt physically exhausted after finishing it. Don't buy it. Save yourself.
"American Dirt" is on Oprah's Book Club -

I liked this book very much. I had a hard time putting it down. My heart was with the migrants trying to make a better life for themselves. This book is about parental love - the love Lydia has for her eight year old son, trying to flee from the drug cartels. I was with them every step of the way. One author said that the book "makes us all live and breathe the refugee story". It is a must read and I most likely will re-read it again.
Boring!

I couldn't get thru the first 100 pages without finding something else to do to distract me from my boredom.
A narco novela
Published by Ana M , 5 years ago
It read as a cheap narco novela romanticizing cartels and the narco culture. Full of harmful and overplayed stereotypes of Mexican culture. If you have even an ounce of respect for Mexican or Latin culture in general please skip this book.
Cheap thriller masqueraded as social justice lit
Published by Bookphd , 5 years ago
The author failed to captured the Mexican community. Things such as Mexican pastries are incorrectly described. If you’re in for a cheap thriller this is for you.
