Bobtailed cats are a natural genetic mutation that creates a shorter tail. They have appeared in countries like Japan and the Isle of Man. Sometimes the proper people notice them, and presto! A new breed. The American Bobtail is descended from a short-tailed kitten John and Brenda Sanders obtained in Arizona. They christened him Yodi, and he fathered the breed in the swinging '60s when he had his way with the Sanders' female, Mishi. Yodi and Mishi's kittens had short tails, indicating a dominant gene caused the condition. Mindy Shoultz, an experienced Persian breeder, teamed together with Charlotte Bentley to create a new breed. They bred the kittens to other naturally short-tailed cats found throughout the US and Canada. They bred the cats to be huge, tough, and sweet-tempered. The breed was developed from non-pedigreed domestic shorthairs and longhairs. After 50 years, the cats' pedigrees are longer than their tails, so no more outcrossing is required.
