The Vaughn family attends the 9/11 Observance led by NAS Corpus Christi Capt. Thomas Sparks. However, former Navy SEAL Captain and current NSA Deputy Director Kenneth Schwartz appears with an ultimatum to Jason: he does a job or Tori does. They adjourn to NCIS Corpus Christi where Schwartz is shot for his message delivery. Jason informs old friends Thomas McBride and Leo Vale; he needs forty-eight hours to prepare his family for what's to come.

When the family gets home to Snyder, Jason's abduction causes the family to go into protective mode as elements of the adventure unfold in rapid succession. Dillon discovers the truth behind his father's abduction while Jason works against Schwartz' allies in Ukraine to prevent a disastrous plot. While Jason works on getting back home, Jennifer and the rest of the family work at every turn to thwart Cecilia's plan to take what the Vaughn family spent a century and a half to build.

As other players enter this drama, Dillon receives an appointment as Acting Sheriff of Scurry County and gets a partner worthy of the friendship of two men who fought as allies in a war and a police action.
