Its been over 20 years since I read Herman Wouk's towering WWII novels, so it was nice to once again go through the chronology of 1942 following an author's fictional participants in the real events. This book starts where "Of Love and War" ends, the aftermath to the attack on Pearl Harbor, and follows the same characters from the first book as the U.S. comes to grips with total war on two major fronts. 1942 was a rough year for the Allies, and the author does a good job of describing America's first faltering steps into the war, surviving the attack on Midway, and finally the invasion and battle of Guadalcanal. The events in the European theater are also included. Fresh, well-researched descriptions of real WWII events and people are what earn this book four stars. Hopefully a third WWII novel is in the works.
