Barnett George Greenberg was an unknown artist who was destined to be forgotten... until Donald Mahoney and Mark Morgan Ford came upon a cache of his work. Impressed by the quality of the drawings and paintings that Greenberg had left behind after his death, they tried to find out more about the man who had created them. What they discovered was a remarkable life. Greenberg's story begins in a tenement on New York's Lower East Side in 1914. A child of Russian Jewish immigrants who came to the United States to escape czarist oppression, he grew up in the Roaring Twenties, made it through the Great Depression, went to war against Hitler as a member of the hand-picked "Ghost Army," and went on to live his own American Dream. When we look at the 48 drawings and paintings selected for this book, we get a feeling for the passion that drove him to create. We are touched by his emotional response to the world around him. We also get a sense of the man himself - his warmth, humanity, sensitivity, and love of life. And we understand why Mahoney and Ford felt so strongly that his was a story that needed to be told.
