The most famous sermon amazed the first people who heard it. The Sermon on the Mount holds memorable phrases like " salt of the earth " and " light of the world ." It contains shocking images such as " if your right eye causes you to stumble, gauge it out ." And it articulates moral ideals that seem both inspiring and impossible - most famously, " love your enemies ." The Sermon on the Mount is treated very differently now than it was two millennia ago. Finally, Units 5-7 look at three people who elaborate on the Sermon: Jesus (in Matthew 18-20), James (in the book named after him), and Paul (in his letter called 1 Corinthians).
