Don Witham didn't start out to be a writer and a newspaperman, but life has a funny way of twisting and turning, and Don found that out, in no uncertain terms. After a stint as a Navy man in WWII, Don served as a national field representative for Community Concerts, a subsidiary of Columbia Artists of New York, N.Y. Then, in 1967, Don was catapulted into the world of newspaper publishing in West Fargo, N.D. Don, a man of many passions, was rarely at a loss for column ideas. National and local politics, societal issues, life in small town America, patriotism, his personal life, and his beloved cats usually provided enough fertile ground for his writings. However, if these topics failed him, all he had to do was walk down the street and, according to Don, "There was a column just waiting to be written." His Underwood wide-carriage typewriter, vintage 1918, was his trusty workhorse as he crafted his commentaries over the years. The result of decades of creativity and observation, this book is a mere smattering of the nearly 2,000 columns that Don wrote for the West Fargo Pioneer, the newspaper that he founded. "Always With'em" is a delightful collection, at times both sweet and provocative, but never without the seasoning of Don's opinion sprinkled in. Now, this body of his work will be preserved for posterity and, more importantly, for those who know and love Don Witham: his family and his readers.
