LOVE ISN'T WORTH THE HEARTACHE IT CAUSES, according to eleven-year-old Brian Blane. He's been in a bad mood since his guinea pig died, and he doesn't want any more pets. But when a couple of houses in his neighborhood are burglarized Brian's divorced parents, who live in the same house, adopt Gertie, a huggable Beagle mix. Brian is determined not to love her, but he can't help it. When Gertie gets seriously injured trying to prevent another late night burglary, Brian decides to stop loving her and everyone else in his life. His parents can stay divorced, Gertie can go back to the shelter, and he has no problem telling the police that he recognized the burglar on the night his dog was attacked. Watch out, everybody. Brian Blane is mad, and he intends to stay that way.
