When members of a family begin dying, the first death causes shock. Even the second death is a cause for alarm. But people expect the third death and excuse it away saying those things "always happen in threes".

Jack Callahan always had a soft spot for sweet, small girls. His soft spot is particularly susceptible when the little girl is grieving over a grandmother to whom she was so close. But when that girl tells Jack that everyone is ignoring her suspicions simply because it was the third of three deaths, Jack can't look aside. He must investigate and find out what really happened and answer the small girl's suspicions.

The fact that Jack was only being kind didn't excuse his prying with the criminals who were working on one of their schemes into which the grandmother had become entangled. Jack's kindness made him a target and as a result, uncertain if he will survive this touchy situation.
