FOR OUR ONCE AND FUTURE CHURCH

Perhaps this is the most accessible, although highly academic, means for Americans to come to know, to understand and to join as one with the ecclesiology and theology of Liberation, that same liberation which Jesus Christ proclaimed at the outset of his public ministry, in fulfillment of the promsies of the Prophets. We could well of course puzzle as well over the writings of the great martyr and confessor of the Faith, Rector of the University of Central America in San Salvador until slaughtered with his community by US directed powers in 1989, the same powers still oppressing El Salvador. The writings of that great theologian and teacher may be read in Freedom Made Flesh: The Mission of Christ and His Churchand Mysterium Liberationis: Fundamental Concepts of Liberation Theology and may also be found in The Ground Beneath The Cross: The Theology Of Ignacio Ellacuria (Moral Traditions) and Love That Produces Hope: The Thought Of Ignacio Ellacuria. His life and passion may be read as written by a surviving member of his community at Witnesses to the Kingdom: The Martyrs of El Salvador and the Crucified Peoples. But we here in the USA, the source of such deadly power, may come to love and to live as one with the People of God through this book by yet another Jesuit priest and theologian, the Reverend Father Roger Haight, SJ, who explores deeply with us here in this book, who mediates fully for us, the meaning of the Theology of Liberation. Do not be deceived. Study this book, and come to know and to live the Gospel and our Faith more fully, as we are to survive as Church. The back matter well describes this book thusly: "First, liberation theology must be seen as a response to massive human suffering winessed throughout the world today. This human agony is largely caused by human beings and the social and political structures we create, and liberation theology addresses this dilemna with the tradition of Christian wisdom and direct imperatives that have universal and transcultural significance. The second goal is achieved by showing the connection between liberation principles and the major docrines of Christian belief." If we are to confront face to face the suffering our wars and our economics bring to millions of fellow human beings who suffer the same passion an Empire brought upon Jesus Christ, we do well to come through the alternative vision of Liberation Theology, if we are to survive this spiritual and emotional journey integrally, wholly in Christian compassion, to seek the forgiveness for our trespasses against them, who are one with us, to come all together unto the peace of God's Reign. By this book we find great meaning in our Faith, the purpose of our Faith, the reason to love, as commanded. Study this book carefully, and the further standard texts in this field, including Liberation Theology and the first definitive text A Theology of Liberation: History, Politics, and Salvation (15th Anniversary Edition with New Introductio
