Coincidentally, I was seated next to Doug (the author) on an airplane prior to the book availability. We had an engaging conversation about this and that until one or the other mentioned kayaking. I'll spare the details of the conversation, but he mentioned he'd written and would soon be publishing the book. I told him to let me know. He did, and I've since purchased and read it. My opinion, then, may be tainted, but you'll have to be the judge. I enjoyed the book very much. I, too, intend to do a solo journey, and his writing has set the tone for my eventual trip. If you're considering a similar trip, or any other overnight wilderness water expedition, I highly recommend the book. For one, you'll discover that he was well prepared. He bestows solid information on both his mental, physical and logistical preparations. He was also forthright about his experiences along the way: the loneliness, some fear, the occasional annoyance of the bugs and the weather. His observations were insightful, and he provided some history of the area enriching the reading experience. He shared some of his thoughts on his life and relationships, and related them to the varied experiences most of us undertake, and the challenges we face, on our respective life journeys. I enjoyed hearing what he had to say and the way in which it was presented. Lastly, there was enough "suspense" to keep the pages turning and a writing style to keep it both interesting and enjoyable. If you like the outdoors, occasional solitude, water adventures (or any adventure) or new challenges, you should read this book.
'Alone' on the Alagash

Doug Leland's account on is epic journey down the Alagash is stimulating, inspiring and full of awe. Just the fact he did the Alagash alone and the narrative of that feat is fulfilling itself, captivating to any kayaker and explorer. However, it is his ability to express his innermost emotions, insight and lessons that has this book transcend the typical adventure book. This book is for anyone traveling life and navigating change. Doug shows us all how useful it is is to live life to the fullest, fulfill our dreams, challenge ourselves and live from deep heart and soul. A must read!
Much more than a travel memoir!

As a veteran kayaker, I was interested in Doug Leland's experiences kayaking the Allagash, and, from the kayaking perspective, the book was very rewarding. However, it was Doug's spirit that really informed the book, and made his journey down the Allagash much more than a kayaking yarn. Doug is one of those rare souls who actually listens to life without an agenda already in place. His experiences on the Allagash were not just about events, but about a wonderful way of being in relationship with nature, with other people, and most of all, with ourselves. This is a book that anyone can enjoy and learn from - whether you plan on kayaking the Allagash or just navigating the waters of life.
Riding The Allagash

You don't have to be a "Mainer" to enjoy this book. A thoroughly enjoyable read. In addition to a terrific story, it could be an analogy of life's journey. The beginning at Chamberlain-Telo Bridge, fair winds and foul along the way, smooth sailing interspersed with threatening rapids, meeting friendly folks and those not so friendly. Realizing that much of the successful outcome of the trip is due to preparation and good decision making. And finally, making it to Mrs. McBraierty's porch to look back on a wonderful journey.
Into the Wild...and Back
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 18 years ago
Doug Leland's wonderful book about his personal journey in the Allagash wilderness is in contrast to the tragic adventure captured by Jon Krakauer's "Into the Wild." While Chris McCandless was running away, Doug's journey was more about what his experiences in the wilderness could do to help him better return to life in the 21st century. For anyone who loves the outdoors and appreciates the spirit of adventure and how nature can touch your soul, this is a must read. As described on the cover, it was truly a journey of mind, body, and spirit. It made me get out the maps and start planning my next adventure.
