ALMOST LOST IN THE AMAZON
Bring on the Tacos
A lifelong dream. Three South American countries. One questionable sense of direction. And an awful lot of food.
What happens when a middle-aged chef finally decides to stop dreaming and start living?
At 50, Jason Rodgers sets off on a solo adventure to South America to fulfil a lifelong ambition: exploring the mighty Amazon. Armed with a camera, questionable Spanish, an appetite for adventure and a stomach that will eat just about anything, he soon discovers that the reality of travelling through South America is far more unpredictable than anything he could have imagined.
From paragliding over the cliffs of Lima and stumbling across what looks suspiciously like a murder scene, to navigating the chaotic markets of Peru, travelling by boat deep into the Amazon and crossing borders into Colombia and Brazil, Jason's journey is anything but straightforward.
There are unexpected friendships, bizarre encounters, incredible wildlife, remote jungle lodges, river dolphins, tropical downpours and moments when he wonders what on earth he's got himself into. Throw in some questionable travel decisions, language mishaps, a few dodgy characters and food ranging from mouth-watering street eats to decidedly unusual delicacies, and you've got one hell of a journey.
And then there's the cake. Lots of cake.
Written with warmth, honesty and a healthy dose of self-deprecating humour, Almost Lost in the Amazon is a refreshingly candid account of travelling independently, embracing the unexpected and discovering that the best experiences often happen when things don't go to plan.
This isn't a polished travel brochure or a guidebook telling you where to stand for the perfect photograph. It's a real-life adventure, full of mishaps, laughter, surprises and the unforgettable people you meet along the way.
Because sometimes the greatest adventure begins when you finally stop making excuses and book that flight.
If you love travel, food, wildlife, off-the-beaten-track adventures and a good laugh at someone else's expense (usually the author's), grab a copy, buckle up and come along for the ride.
Just don't expect a sensible itinerary. Or enough cake to share.
