Why one of Shakespeare's least performed plays? One can speculate the reason is that it doesn't END all that WELL...at least in terms of an ending that's completely acceptable to an audience looking for all the pieces to be tied up neatly. Shakespeare was certainly aware that to have the cad Bertram spin on a dime and declare he will love Helena "dearly...ever, ever dearly," if indeed she is pregnant with his child...he would be teasing the audience beyond what they might tolerate. Has Helena slipped some of her chemist-father's drug into everyone's teacup? The King and others hearing Bertram's stunning words seem very non-challant and okay with this. Up to this point, the play is a romp if you're looking for comedy; smutty, if you're looking for smut; thought provoking if you're looking for something to chew on. This version suggests a director's solution to the peculiar ending!!
