Better than it seems

I bought this originally in a drugstore in 1977. I was all caught up in the current literary movement known as "Predatoricism," in which a symbolic animal or insect causes danger to an unsuspecting community, highlighting the folly of Man. "Jaws" I & II (a shark), "Orca" (killer whale), "Nightwing" (bats), "The Swarm" (killer bees), "Feral" (kitty kattys), "The Long Dark Night" (dogs), and "Maneater" (tigers) were all books I read from that era. Of those, "Alligator" was my particular favorite. Rather than showing the corruption and hypocrisy of a community that falls apart in denial while a beast or beasts nibble away at their weakest links, "Alligator" shows us an assortment of loners too lost to their own isolation to notice the giant reptile on the prowl. The setting is the Everglades. A midlife crisis Paul Neuman type named "Rye" and a young Robert Redford type whose name escapes me (I haven't read it since 1978!)eventually team up to capture the gator, with all the inevitable Moby Dickisms to make Ahabs out of this odd couple who come to a grudging respect for each other. There was sex, obscenity, and gore enough to float my 14 year old boat at the time. Get a copy for your kids today!!
