Mai's Amazing Life!

Mai Zetterling didn't have it all. She was beautiful and intelligent but she never gained the same fame as her contemporaries, Ingrid Bergman and Greta Garbo but she deserved just as much recognition. She was a wife and mother but admits her failings as a parent and she comes clean about her endless abortions. She had an amazing career which including writing, screenwriting, producing, acting and even directing films of her own which is rare for a woman of her time. She was truly a pioneer for women in being the independent film director. She was a woman ahead of her time. I will always remember her for her performances in Frieda and the grandmother in "The Witches" is how I discovered her.

Mai's Life through Her Own Words!

Mai Zetterling was a complicated woman. She was a writer, actress, author, producer and director rare for a woman of her time. She discusses in her only memoir about her life from Sweden, her father's abandonment and unsucessful reunion, her failures of being mother, her many abortions, her divorces, and living life alone now. She writes about how much she loathes Hollywood. She was a longtime London resident who accomplished so much in her lifetime. It wasn't until I saw her in the 1990 film, "The Witches" playing a witch-slaying grandmother to the boy that I discovered her. Mai's presence was beautiful and glamorous but she wasn't really a household name like her contemporaries Greta Garbo or Ingrid Bergman. She was in their league as well. Despite all her achievements, she wasn't really remembered as she should have been. This book only tells part of her amazing life. I wish Mai happiness where ever she is.

Highly recommended portrait of an actress and rebel

All Those Tomorrows was written ten years before Mai Zetterling's death. It's a remarkable story of a woman whose acting abilities and unique appearance led her to the theater, to Hollywood, to documentary film, and to work as a director. Her take on Hollywood is brutal but fascinating. Zetterling also is frank about her private life, and she devotes a chapter to a very intense affair she had with Tyrone Power that gives a new insight into the man. A very good autobiography.
