All that was Bright and Ugly, is the story of a young man from his teenage years of insecurity, into a confident philanderer who eventually becomes a philosophising adult questioning the whole idea of love.Before Andre Obika leaves Nigeria to further his education abroad, he is a teenager moving with older boys that laugh at his inability to have a girlfriend. He finds a way to gain an enviable status among them, when he shows them the picture of his beautiful, but headstrong girlfriend, Adaora, who eventually disappoints him by not taking his virginity, which he meant to give her as a 'parting gift' as he leaves for higher education in Cyprus.In Cyprus, Andre's commitment to Adaora warms up again when she calls him. He begins to dream of returning home to meet a naive Aba town girl. He however returns home to a changed Adaora.The stories that follow, explore his romantic relationships in Europe and on his return to Nigeria after his education.Each chapter in the novel, named doors, open up original characters that explore themes that range from cultural nuances, racism, identity, modern life and aspirational tensions of the teenage and early twenty years.
