All My Bones: An Old Juniper Bookshop Mystery

(Book #2 in the Old Juniper Bookstore Mysteries Series)

Madeline Brimley, new owner of a bookstore in a small Georgia town, finds herself playing sleuth when a friend is charged with the murder of a much-disliked woman.

Madeline Brimley recently inherited a bookstore in Enigma, Georgia, is embarking on her second career, after her first one (acting) founders upon the metaphorical rocks. Settling in, Madeline recruits her friend Gloria Coleman, the local Episcopal priest, to help her plant azaleas in the front yard of the old Victorian that houses the bookstore. Turning the soil, however, uncovers the body of one Beatrice Glassie, a troublesome woman who has been missing for the past six months.

When her friend Gloria is arrested for the murder, Madeline is determined to prove her innocence and, as she quickly finds out, there aren't many people in town who hadn't wanted to kill Bea Glassie at one point or another. And the very expensive and rare first edition of a particular volume of Grimm's Fairy Tales--ordered by the victim and her sister is somehow tied to the grim death. With the help of her not-quite-boyfriend, a local lawman, and her deceased aunt's best friend, Madeline plans to set a trap to catch the real murderer--before she becomes the next victim.

Fun times in Enigma!

The second book in the series, this expands a little more of the town that Madeline has come to know and love as the newest owner of an awesome bookshop (that I would love to visit, especially to see the not for sale rare book section). It may be a small town but it is full of quirky people and definitely quite a few murders. This time, the body discovered in a grave at the bookshop is none other than Bea Glassie (rich but not really well liked) and it gets quite crazy with everybody pointing fingers, quite a few suspects, and family connections gumming up the works in solving the case quickly. I found it to be fairly cozy, murder aside, with lots of little history tidbits about old books, theaters, and even specialized roses. Plus there is a lovely romance blossoming, friends sticking together, even ones who might have several stays at a psychiatric hospital under their belt or a priest with a checkered past. I would not call it a particularly twisty mystery but it was light and enjoyable and just as much to see what quirky messes the other characters get into. It is a good second book in the series and I am definitely interested in continuing this to find out what happens next with Madeline and her friends in the small but fun town of Enigma, Georgia. I am glad I got the chance to read this.

Laughed my sox off

Retired actor Madeline and the local Anglican priest were digging up the mess that had once been the front garden of the bookstore when they came upon a skeleton of a murdered woman. Turns out that it belonged to a wealthy elder of the community. So, of course, the rather batty and equally disliked sister of the deceased insisted that it was the cleric who had done the deed while everyone in the community thought she was out of the country. Madeline really got steamed when the state police put the cleric in custody, so it was soon decided that a few likeminded friends would investigate and find the real murderer. The characters are great fun and the basic plot is sneaky with its twists and hilarious one liners. Even better than book one!
