This is a good "anytime" movie, but it really hits home during the holiday season when everyone is thinking about what they want for Christmas. In this story, an older boy must find the perfect homes for his sibling brothers and sisters. A real tearjerker, this story also sends home the message that people should appreciate the people they have around them. The oldest son, orphaned by a widowed mother, is given the task of giving away the only possessions he has in the world, his family. My grandmother, Yvonne, found out she was dying the year the movie was made. She left behind three girls and two boys. The youngest daughter was 10 years old. She brought her to this movie to prepare her for what was coming. Not only is this a good book, but a great movie. It has a special place in my family and in my heart. Children,as well as adults, should watch the movie together or read the book as a family. It will generate a lot of discussion and renew family ties when each looks into their own hearts and asks the question, "What do I really want for the holidays?" He gave his siblings the best he could, a new home. He gave until it hurt. How many of us can say this? I believe this book and movie are timeless gems.
