Be Prepared to Work!

This course deserves much better than some of the low ratings it has received, IMO. I particularly liked the conversations at the beginning of each lesson. If you stick with it, it will help you very much, as it has done for me. But you must be prepared to work, investigate other French reference works (such as on-line sites, grammar books, or dictionaries), and be OK with being perplexed for a while. I would have given it four-and-one/half stars, if I could. I did not give it five stars because, even though it comes with a guide-book, I (being primarily visual) heard some phrases that were not in the guidebook and I had no idea (at first) how they were spelled. For example, the audio mentioned "bee-suh-clut." I tracked that down for quite a while until I saw, in another book, "bicyclette." Aha! It is a good companion to "Behind the Wheel French (Level 1), but I would start with "Behind the Wheel." Addendum, January, 2010: To really understand the rules of French grammar and syntax, I recommend "Beginning French--A Cultural Approach" by Hendrix and Meiden. We use this in my French class and it is INVALUABLE.

Very useful for what I was doing

I used these cd's to help me prepare for the CLEP french exam. I listened to it in the car during my comute and it replaced me spending a lot of time in the lab. The lessons are good, they have a small conversation at the first of each lesson then break it down sentence by sentence. It covered all the topics from my firast year french book, and more.
