A young woman in mainland China becomes captivated by Mao Zedong's philosophy. After enduring the Japanese occupation, in 1949 she becomes active in the New Chinese Youth League, and goes north to a Russian language institute with dreams of bringing about a new way of life in her country. When the revolution turns against academics, her new husband is sent off to Chinese "Siberia" to do labor. Pregnant, she returns to her hometown of Hangzhou and faces a decision of whether to stay there with her family, or join her husband and become a teacher.
