With an alibi in place, and no body or forensics, Boyd is in the clear, right? Not so fast... Enter rookie detective Amy Galler who while investigating Boyd's alabi meets his best friend a Rainier mountain guide who is key to helping her put the pieces together. In Alabi on Ice, Small has created a powerhouse debut novel, one rich in scenery, in characters and plot. Mount Rainier is a character in this novel, not just a background. This is one great read.
Suspense on Ice

No body, no witnesses, and an alibi, Emery Boyd has struck again, another perfect murder - make that plural. And only Mount Rainier knows. What on earth can bring Boyd down? Hey, give the cops and reporters credit: They tried; they used trickery, seduction and intimidation. But nothing is working for them. Or is it? Does Boyd's best friend, John Whitney, Rainier chief guide, know something, maybe in his subconscious mind? What might clear his head, induce him to betray someone he considers a brother? And, speaking of "brother," just what happened to Whitney's brother thirty years ago? This debut novel enthralls; it wraps one up in suspense, thrills and surprises as tightly as a collapsed crevasse. Enjoy.

From the opening page, the story will pull you in deeper than Mount Rainier's crevasses. Look forward to an entertaining read, but also prepare to pay attention. Mr. Small spins a tale of interwoven ambitions and intrigue, inviting you into the opulent offices of shrewd, ruthless attorneys, then thrusting you outdoors into the breathtaking, but treacherous, scenic slopes of Mount Rainier. This one will keep your curiosity itching as you travel through a mystery world peopled by well drawn characters, many of whom are dispatched with deadly skill by a slick and chilling killer masquerading as a normal human being. This is good stuff. Anyone who enjoys a mystery will definitely not be disappointed, but don't expect any car chases or mindless explosions. The author has no need of conventional cliches to keep and hold your interest. In the end, all of the puzzle pieces interlock perfectly. Plus, the choice of settings is literally a breath of fresh air, the rugged wilderness of the American northwest. If this novel were a movie, the only thing missing would be the prerequisite Alfred Hitchcock cameo.

A very exciting read. An evil lawyer as the lead and you always wander whether he will get what he deserves and if so how. Good characters and a plot that moves quickly to a conclusion. The best character throughout the book, particularly the second half is the beautiful and dangerous Mt Ranier. As the action unrolls on the mountain Small makes you feel as if you are there. presence andlast par
Treachery is a Slippery Slope

Only Mount Rainier itself is more deadly than Seattle lawyer and ace climber Emery Boyd when he's got something to gain or cover up. With ice in his veins and blood on his axe, Boyd leaves no trail as he turns a national park into a burial ground. Crevasses make excellent tombs, you know, and there are no headstones. There's no corpus delecti, no witnesses, and Boyd has an alibi. What are the cops to do? Can Detective Amy Galler nail Boyd with deceit, by using his most loyal friend, John Whitney, Rainier's chief guide? Or will a sleazy reporter get lucky and break the case? Or maybe none of the above. Think Hitchcock and "Twilight Zone," all wrapped in ice. This debut tale spinner has a corker to pop. Do mountains remember?
