The area certainly has a long past - it is thought the town was founded by Kind Alfred who named the settlement after himself. In later years, the town's growth and prosperity was centred on agricultural production, cottage industries, coal mining and iron production. Lawrence in Woman in Love, and Alfreton Hall, the former home of the Palmer-Morewood family, who were Lords of the Manor for 334 years.
