The book discusses how Albany, New York and the surrounding area developed the military resources to defend the community. The British Army was defeated at Saratoga in 1777 due in part to the work of the Northern Department of the American Army which was located in Albany. Many military officers from the Albany area helped to defeat the British Army in upstate New York. The book analyzes the fighting that began in 1775 when the Americans invaded Canada and follows the various military campaigns in upstate New York to the end of the Revolutionary War. Case studies are used which outline the actions of American Major General Philip Schuyler in 1777 as the British were attacking upstate New York. Another case study examines the aspects of General Burgoyne's invasion in 1777 and the basic flaws that were included in his plan of attack. A final case study examines the events associated with the defense of Fort Stanwix in 1777. The book also analyzes how the governmental structure in Albany was changed as the American Revolution developed.
