This book contains two collections of poems. The first Ajalon's Daughter, describes the early years of the poet's mother, Mary Chaney, whose family homesteaded near Gilter, Nebraska in the 1890s. Depression's Child continues Mary's story through the eyes of her youngest son, born in 1932, during the Great Depression. Depression's Child provides an intimate glimpse into the struggles of a family thrust into economic hardship. Marsh's vivid and honest description precludes the collection slipping into pure nostalgia. He further speaks honestly about his own struggles with depression. A subject not spoken of during the era about which he writes.
