Military denistry is at a crossroads. After a history of success, AF dentistry finds itsef with a small deployment mission and great pressure to be the best value alternative to outsourcing/privatization. Some outsourcing test projects are underway and opportunities exist to improve the business aspects of military dentistry. Through a review of published material and information from the office of the Assistant Surgeon General for Dental Services (coordinated): (1) pertinent issues will be described that led to the situation; (2) the enviornment will be descibed (risks and opportunities) to develop alternatives; (3) a best business strategy will be suggested to sustain quality, accountability and service to the beneficiaries.
