A client of Caroline's uses his connections to help them find David, but in return, she must plan his society wedding in Dallas. The three head to Texas, where the big sky, empty space, and bride-to-be wreak havoc with David, and he disappears once again. When Caroline and Virgil finally reach the Grand Canyon, Caroline learns of his illness and makes an important promise to him and to herself. The road-trip frames the action in this powerful and elegiac novel, but on a deeper level, the insight and compassion Jean Shields brings to the writing tell a story about duty and priorities, life and death, and all the things that love can mean. I laughed, I cried.

I laughed, I cried and I LOVED Air Burial. Jean Shield's prose was poetry! Beautifully written, even after breaking all known social taboos. Jean, please write another book!

On The Road ... Again!

AIR BURIAL is a terrific read. I was involved very early on and to the point I couldn't put it down. There are some classic quotes in this novel that I don't want to give away ... dialogue that will have you laughing out loud and repeating like a mantra (my wife has one she constantly uses when confronted with particularly daunting people) ... my favorite quote continues to bring a smile to my face at the mere thought of it ... Jean Shields knows how to tell a story from both male and female perspectives and her ballsy drug addict character's stretch in a New Orleans lock-up (with some bad dudes) is gritty and graphic and a wonderful read through.It's a modern day On The Road ... with better dialogue ...
