There are now many Aikido books that explain how to perform Aikido techniques, and these are of course very useful guides and memory aids, particularly for beginners. This book is not of that genre. It does not contain details of specific Aikido techniques; rather, it focuses on theory, attitudes (that is, 'Philosophy') and practical tips (that is, 'Pragma') that act as foundations for the practice of Aikido. As such, the material and advice the author presents are independent of the numerous Aikido practice styles that exist. Thus, whatever style of Aikido you practice or are contemplating practising, you will find the information contained here both useful and non-contradictory. The contents of this book are actually a distillation and extension of the principles, concepts and practical advice that the author has written about in his other Aikido publications, his intention here being to provide a practical guide to dojo practice for Aikido students, especially, but not exclusively, for beginners. He has extracted the essential information contained in these books, supplemented them with more detailed explanations of certain concepts and provided additional information, hopefully to facilitate and enhance enjoyable Aikido practice. The chapters need not be read in the sequence in which they appear: they can be dipped into in any desired order. For this reason, certain topics appear more than once, albeit presented in different ways according to the particular context. There is also included a glossary of Japanese terms (shown in italics in the text) used in the book, as well as other Japanese terms relating to martial arts that the reader might encounter.
