AI '95 is the Eighth Australian Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence. The main theme of AI '95 is 'bridging the gaps', i.e., bridging the gap between the classical symbolic approach and other subsymbolic approaches, such as artificial neural networks, evolutionary computation and artificial life, to AI and bridging the gap between the AI theory and real world applications. The invited keynote speakers and accepted papers reflect our main theme. This volume includes 66 full-length papers accepted for oral presentation and 30 one-page summaries of the papers accepted for poster presentation. The titles of presented papers in the special sessions on real-world applications are also included. These papers cover a wide range of topics related to AI, such as automated reasoning, knowledge representation, knowledge acquisition, machine learning, evolutionary computation, neural networks, robotics, expert systems, multi-agent systems, fuzzy logic systems, natural language processing, pattern recognition, distributed AI, etc. A good proportion of the papers describe AI applications.AI '95 features three international keynote speakers. Professor Kenneth De Jong from George Mason University is an authority in evolutionary computation. He will discuss evolving intelligence in his keynote speech. Professor William Clancey from the Institute for Research on Learning is a well respected celebrity in AI. He will explore the relationship between symbolic and subsymbolic reasoning in his keynote speech. Both Professor De Jong's and Professor Clancey's papers are included in this volume. The third keynote speaker is Dr Suan Garavaglia of Dun and Bradstreet, a well-known in the financial world for her work relating to the use of AI in finance.
