Ahl al-Bayt (a) in Nahj al-Balagha

The book in your hand has been authored on the occasion of the millennium of Sayyid Razi, may Allah bless him. It is a quick research conducted into Nahj al-balagha about the Household of the Holy Prophet, peace be upon them, as reported and described in the words and sayings of the Commander of the Faithful, Ali (a).

Nahj al-balagha compiled by Sayyid Razi, may Allah bless him, is a collection of letters and sayings of the Commander of the Faithful, Imam Ali (a) consisting of teachings, thoughts and opinions of the Imam on different topics. There is no doubt that the book was compiled by Sayyid Razi and any doubt concerning the fact that it includes sermons and sayings of the Commander of the Faithful (a) amounts to doubting the existence of the Imam and Sayyid Razi together.

In order for us to know the Household of the Holy Prophet, peace be upon them, it is necessary to go through Nahj al-balagha because the Commander of the Faithful (a) is, after the Holy Prophet (s), the chief figure among the Ahl al-Bayt (a) and that he is fully aware of the positions and traits of each member in the family of the Prophet, peace be upon him and his descendants. Moreover, his sayings about people are not but the exact truth and pure actuality.

The Household of the Prophet (s) has been referred to and mentioned in different parts of Nahj al-balagha on different occasions and for various motives. In most cases, Ali (a) has, by various means and methods, reminded us of the merits and superiority of the Ahl al-Bayt as also evidenced by the Quran and authentic traditions of the Holy Prophet, peace be upon him and his family. Not only were they superior to other relatives and companions of the Prophet but they were also divinely appointed to guide and lead the Muslim Ummah.

When we take a more in-depth and closer look at those characteristics and their meanings and then refer to their reasons in the Quran and traditions, we come to know that the people who Muslims agree to be prone to error cannot be included in the Household or progeny of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him and his family.
