Indian economy is basically an agrarian economy and even now nearly 68 per cent of workforce directly or indirectly depends on agriculture. Thus, it still provides large-scale employment opportunities as being a major contributing factor for this labour-surplus economy. However, agricultural stagnation and agrarian distress is a subject of widespread discussion in recent years. This has been projected in a high degree of instability in farm incomes which have serious implications on living conditions of the people living on agriculture. This is due to adverse weather conditions which affect crop yields leading to wild fluctuations in prices of crops. Many regions in the country are under the grip of economic and environmental stock.
