Against The Valentinians

By Tertullian

Book Overview

Against the Valentinians is a book written by Tertullian, a prominent early Christian writer and theologian. The book is a polemic against the Valentinian Gnostics, a group of heretics who believed in a complex system of divine emanations and claimed to possess secret knowledge of the true nature of God and the universe. In the book, Tertullian argues against the Valentinian teachings and exposes their errors and inconsistencies. He also defends the orthodox Christian faith and its beliefs about the nature of God, Christ, and salvation. The book is divided into several chapters, each addressing a different aspect of Valentinianism and refuting its claims. Tertullian uses biblical and theological arguments to support his case and to demonstrate the superiority of Christian doctrine over the heretical teachings of the Valentinians.Overall, Against the Valentinians is an important work of early Christian apologetics and a valuable source for understanding the debates and controversies that shaped the development of Christian theology in the early centuries of the church. Now it is held amongst them, that, for the purpose of honouring the celestial marriages, (1) it is necessary to contemplate and celebrate the mystery always by cleaving to a companion, that, is to a woman; otherwise (they account any man) degenerate, and a bastard(2) to the truth, who spends his life in the world without loving a woman or uniting himself to her. Then what is to become of the eunuchs whom we see amongst them? This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
