One of the Best Heartsongs I Have Ever Read!

This book did not at all follow the standard boy-meets-girl format of the typical romance book. It was very intense, with great historical background, and the characters were exactly what you would expect for the period after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. There were many layers of loss involved, and feelings of being abandoned by God that gradually gave way to a new appreciation of His nearness through all the trauma. The author portrayed both the Christian perspective of objection to the killing and the Japanese incarceration through Daniel, and the patriotic perspective of fighting to protect your country through Claire. Many statistics about Japanese-American loss and courage were presented. A lot of the problems between Daniel and Claire were caused by their inability to communicate their feelings and convictions. All in all, one of the best books of this type I have ever read.
