After The Ball Was Over: The Best of Plans

She knew who he was, and she also knew he had been escorting someone else around the city, and who, apparently, had been discarded. She also knew he was one of the privileged who held an invitation to The Ball, and she wasn't going to let anything stand in her way of getting there. As she saw it, opportunity was knocking loud and clear, and she was going to make sure the door was wide open to let it in. She was excited and concerned. Excited, a wall was breaking down sooner than she had expected. Ever since her childhood, she had dreamed of being the Belle of the Ball, the Cinderella with her Prince, the Center of the Spotlight where all eyes would be upon Her and of course, her Handsome Prince. He smiled. "And what is it you want?" She paused, "I don't know. To be right there! Ready to seize the moment! To snatch the brass ring the second it appears!" "It's a complicated story. I'll try to simplify it. My parents died when I was young, and because there were no relations known to me, I was out on the streets. For the next two years I survived by sleeping wherever I could and by helping myself to goods that didn't belong to me, eating those I could and selling those that would give me money to spend on items other than food.Have you any idea at all what it is you want?" "Right now I don't really know. I've been in the city going on two years. I like it here, but I don't plan on being a secretary forever. What's ahead for me in a man's world? I don't know. But if something, as I said before, shows up, I want to be ready for it. Even If nothing shows up right away, I'm sure after tonight, I'll have a clearer picture of what to expect. There has to be, again repeating myself, something more for a woman like me than being a wife and raising children." "How much did you take! Or as you said, borrowed?" She interrupted. "Four thousand dollars to the penny." "Four thousand dollars!" she exclaimed. "That's a lot of money! How do you ever plan to pay it back? "Sorry," she said. But how can he be so calm about it? Four thousand dollors! He steals four thousand dollors and acts as if itwere pennies. How did she really feel about that? Him? What he was doing? What she was doing? What was she thinking, feeling? Amazed? Skeptical? Excited? Why is she questioning herself ? She knew exactly how she felt. What is he really offering me? I can't leave now. It's starting to get interesting. I simply have to stick around and see where all this is going.
