Darko and Petar are bound by loyalty and hardship, two souls tethered through trials both harsh and unrelenting-though Petar's burden always seems the heavier. Disillusioned by Europe's worn promises, they turn west, seeking a future in the uncertain embrace of Paraguay. Darko, gifted with wisdom, offers guidance freely, a steady hand amid the currents of fate.
Their journey takes them first to Argentina, under the looming shadow of the 1871 yellow fever epidemic. At the Port of Buenos Aires, they are received by Mr Raffaello, before pressing onward into Paraguay, a land still tender from the wounds of the War of the Triple Alliance.
Darko marries Ester, gentle and tender, and together they raise seven daughters. Yet even amid the fullness of life, melancholy-an ancient, almost spectral inheritance-stirs within him, threading its way through generations like a dark current beneath calm waters.
It is Petra, of the fourth generation, who must confront a choice that will define her. In the luminous embrace of the Holy Words, she discovers a long-awaited liberation, a radiance so potent that even the trembling shadow recoils in fear at its edge.
