African Spurred Tortoise

Overview of the African Spurred Tortoise The African Spurred Tortoise (Centrochelys sulcata), also known as the Sulcata Tortoise, stands out as one of the largest tortoise species found on the African continent. Adult Sulcatas can reach lengths of up to 30 inches (76 cm) and weigh over 100 pounds (45 kg), with some individuals even surpassing this. Characterized by their thick, scaly skin and prominent spurs on their hind legs, these tortoises have a distinct appearance that sets them apart from other species. They possess a high-domed, brownish shell that provides protection from predators and environmental elements. Origin and Natural Habitat Native to the arid regions of the Sahara Desert and the Sahel, a transitional ecozone just south of the Sahara, African Spurred Tortoises are well-adapted to a life in harsh environments. Their natural habitat consists of the semi-arid grasslands, savannahs, and thorn scrub areas where temperatures can soar. These tortoises are built for survival in such climates, with their ability to dig extensive burrows to escape the extreme heat. These burrows can be several meters deep and serve not only as a refuge from heat but also from cold temperatures during the night or seasonally.
