Although they are essentially emanations or avatars of the ultimate deity Olodumare, Orisha (also spelled Orisa and Orishas) are supernatural beings that are frequently referred to as deities in the Yoruba religion of West Africa. As a sort of abbreviation for "without number" or "innumerable," their number is typically represented as 400 + 1.
According to archaeological evidence, the development of orisha worship occurred between 500 and 300 BCE, although it is likely considerably earlier because so many West African sites remain unexplored. The Yoruba people hold that Olodumare is too vast for the human mind to comprehend, therefore it unleashed several portions of itself, each of which was randomly assigned a definite zone of influence. Olodumare scattered the forces of dominion, and whoever Orisha grabbed was in charge of that domain.
